I remember when I was 17-year old, very skinny guy, a hard-gainer. I saw an advertisement on television about how we can gain weight and muscles by consuming 2-3 scoops of “this” weight gainer in a single meal. I was really excited to have this gainer shake in my daily diet.


I ordered one kg pack of this weight gainer with Amazon, it was a little costly for me as I have to pressurize my parents to spend that much money and to buy this weight gainer shakes. The labeling of the box recommends that “for the best results, take 2-3 drinks a day”, yes 2-3 drinks a day.


At that time I don’t know anything about supplements and shakes. I was a wanna-be fitness freak who just saw an advertisement on T.V and want to spend money with a basic thinking that it will help me with my goal of building muscles to achieve a good physique within months of hard work.


So, I read the dosage information on the label. It was something like that:


Add 2-3 Bananas + Milk (according to texture and thickness) + 2 scoops(mass gainer) + Almonds and Resins(optional) + 1 scoop ice-cream(optional).


All these things in a single shake. I used to take 2 drinks in a day. One, in the early morning and the other in my post workout after exercising.


One box hardly covers 10-12 days. I used to spend money on 2 boxes a month. My first month was good, the mass gainer was working fine without any issues. I used to get a great pump in my workouts because of high carbs present in my diet which is coming from this mass gainer. At that time I had gained weight around 3 kg after 2 months. I was really a hard gainer, my body is just like that.


I used 7 boxes in total and oh man, after 2 months, I started facing serious bloating issues, my stomach used to stay upset. Sometimes constipation and sometimes the opposite. In short, I was facing issues in my gut which is not at all a good sign from my body. All I get is pure 3-4 kg FAT on my stomach. What!


I had transformed myself into a skinny fat person, by using these weight gainer shakes on a daily basis, who had little-to-no muscles in the whole body but too much fat around the stomach area.


Though, I was literally training very hard that my joints used to pain sometimes because, I read somewhere that if you taking any mass gainer supplement in your body, you need to train hard to utilize those extra calories. But still, my body was not able to digest or burn that much of calories coming from this mass gainer.


I stopped using it. And at that time, I don’t realize why I am facing these issues and had taken the decision to discontinue it.

I was really depressed and was not able to figure out that why I am not seeing the results which I am looking for.

Then, what happened that I started researching, about mass gainers and weight gainers, why they are not working the same way as suggested on the label by the company.

I talked the matter with my gym trainer. I explained that I am taking gainers and they are not working for me. What to do now? Now I am fully aware that why I felt like that on that day. The information provided by my trainer was priceless and that information can actually save you many bucks if you completely understood it today.


I spend close to 6000-7000 rupees($90-$110) in these 4 months. It costs a lot of money but gave me nothing more than 3-4 kg fat on my stomach. For which most people go to the gym to shred or lose their weight. Today when I thought of that day, I kinda feel that I was such a naive at that time.


My trainer said that mass gainers generally contains a lot of calories and if you take 2-3 drinks a day, then your body will not be able to digest that many calories. Those calories are basically from simple carbohydrates, and sugar. 


As carbohydrates are the primary source of energy to our body, all the extra energy is basically unused energy which I was not able to utilize or digest. I was giving 100 percent in my workouts but still, there is soo much extra energy(Carbohydrates) in my body left to be used.


What will the body do now? It has to use the extra energy somewhere! So, our body starts converting and storing the extra energy in the form of fat in those areas where fats are generally stored which is mostly in the stomach.

In simple words gaining weight and losing weight depends on the calorie you put in and successfully able to digest. If we go by the science, it says that to gain weight we need to eat food as clean as possible with the proper allotment of micro and macronutrients, but the carbohydrates must be a little high in the diet. Simple!

Then, you would ask me now that, so what? Carbs are needed to gain weight. Yes, that’s completely true.


As I said earlier that we need to keep our diet as clean as possible with little high carbs. 


The main point I am trying to explain to you that, yes these mass/weight gainers have carbs but they are high in simple carbs and that too in a single drink in very high quantity. That’s the problem.


Simple carbohydrates are just the opposite of complex carbohydrates. Complex carbs are required to do a transformation and not the simple carbs. In most cases, these simple form of carbohydrates is used as a cheat meal which means, one has to avoid these things from his diet and can take in a minimum quantity on weekdays, that’s why it is called as Cheat meal.


Our body can only digest max-to-max 500-700 calorie at full throttle and these mass gainers contain 1200-2000 calories in a single drink. What do you expect from your body to respond? It is very difficult for the body to digest that much calorie in a single time and that too from simple carbs which are really in very high quantity.


There’s no point of consuming that much calorie in a single meal. Also, one major problem is that these boxes contain much sugar content that one can become diabetic if he chooses to take them for a longer period of time. These mass gainers side effects can make you diabetic.


If you really want to consume a mass gainer and want to use it safely. You can use the gainers without damaging the body with a simple strategy.


Purchase the gainer and use consistently for one month (around 2 boxes) and then add 2 months of a gap in between and then continue to use it like that. It would be a better strategy in the long term. What it will do that it will break that chain or urge to consume the gainer on a regular basis.


The thing is that your brain creates an urge to consume the mass gainer more and more because of the sugar content present in high quantity in a single damn box. Those who have purchased a gainer before will understand how it creates an urge to consume more in high quantities by adding extra scoops daily.

My best advice to my skinny bros who struggle to gain weight, basically muscle weight is that try to consume minimum to minimum 4 meals a day in every 2.5-3 hours of a gap in between.


Understand that you’re genetically like that. Your body takes very less time to digest food. The process of digestion is very fast.


That’s why skinny guys come under the category of “Ectomorphs” which means that body burns energy really fast, that’s the reason we don’t have fat content, or even muscles in our body because our body digestion system runs too fast. It’s really very important to consume food regularly in shorter intervals so that you can overpass you body burning capacity.

I don’t think these weight gainer shakes would make any difference in the way you look. You will be still the same after months. But this time with a little stomach fat and digestion issues. And if you choose to use them for the long term. You are opening doors for diabetes. Because you are consuming too much sugar daily.


Understand this way, What is a mass gainer? It is nothing more than a carbs supplement with added sugar which means that you are spending money on a supplement which is only giving you carbs in return which is the cheapest macronutrient. Does that make sense?


If it doesn’t. Take a look at your kitchen. What do you find? Onion, tomatoes, cabbage, potato etc? What are all these? All these are carbs and they are in the natural form which doesn’t need any processing. You can consume them directly.


Even you can make your own carbs supplement at home which is far better than spending thousands on these cheap quality boxes. Because a mass gainer will give your side effects in the long run.


Buying or not? It’s a personal choice, I can only guide you with the science behind the proper working of mass gainers. It really depends on you that still, you consider consuming supplements to gain weight, you can try it for yourself. If it works for you in the long run, very good. But if it doesn’t you will learn better.
